Ask Marion: What’s the Optimal Heel Height for Comfort and Style?
There isn’t one perfect heel height out there for everyone. There are a number of factors that contribute to a shoe feeling comfortable — and heel height isn’t everything.
Shoe Design and Quality Are Essential for Fit and Comfort
On my very first production trip I learned that every millimeter matters in footwear design. Also that heel height and cushioning aren’t the magic bullets for comfort. What you really need is support and stability. We’ve sculpted both of these elements quietly into the design of every shoe with our twice-patented insole.
Our team spends a tremendous amount of resources to ensure that every design, mold, bucket and strap is mindful of the anatomy of the foot and ankle. And we work tirelessly to troubleshoot all technical aspects of a shoe as it progresses through each stage of development.
Embrace Trial and Error to Find the Right Fit
I often say that no two feet are the same — even on the same person. I suspect many of you can relate. One foot might be wider or have a bunion, neuroma or prior injury.
Finding the right-sized shoe may require a bit of trial and error. Often, it’s because sizing varies between brands and shoe designs themselves can change from season to season. Also, certain foot types fit better in different styles of shoes, which can affect your ideal size.
Our Customer Care team is committed to helping you find the right fit every time. They often ask me for specific recommendations when customers reach out. Please don’t hesitate to contact us .
How to Choose the Most Comfortable Heel Height
I suggest taking your activity level and the ground surface into consideration when selecting a shoe for the day or a special occasion. For example, consider a wedge or flat shoe for grass or cobblestones. Kitten heels and block heels tend to work well for extended periods of standing or walking.
Of course I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that a small heel — even a centimeter or half inch — on a flat shoe can make a big difference in comfort and wearability. It helps reduce tension on the plantar fascia and Achilles tendon. If you’ve ever experienced plantar fasciitis, the number one cause of heel pain, you’ll appreciate even the smallest heel rather than a truly flat shoe construction.
Kitten Heels
Kitten heels are simultaneously versatile and chic. Their sensible height makes for greater ease of walking and standing on a variety of surfaces. I especially like the use of artful shapes and novel materials on a smaller scale.
For example, the molded heel of our Haley mules and Maya sandals gives the lower heel some added interest without a dramatic increase in height or scale.
Block Heels
I personally gravitate towards block heels because of the added stability. One of my favorites this season is the Francine block heel. This is the mary jane style that started the brand. This chic silhouette provides further stability on uneven surfaces and while standing for longer periods of time.
Find Your Perfect Fit and Size at Every Heel Height with Marion Parke
Certain shoe styles will be more or less comfortable depending on your foot type. For example, if you have a narrow heel, you should avoid slingbacks. If you have a high arch, try boots with zippers rather than pull-on styles, and avoid shoes with straps across the midfoot that aren’t adjustable.
If you have a wide foot, buy the correct size for the length of your foot instead of going up in size to gain width. If the shoe is too tight, take it to a shoe repair shop for stretching.
